The work of Michigan's Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission
2021 will be the first year that a nonpartisan citizen commission will draw Michigan voting districts, rather than state legislators. The commission began meeting in fall 2020, and will use data from the decennial census and citizen input to determine district lines by November 2021. The commission includes four members affiliated with the Democratic Party, four with the Republican Party, and five not affiliated with a major political party.
Sue Smith has been active with the commission, and will talk about the history of the commission, the vote to establish it, the role that citizens still have, and establishing communities of interest. Anqunette Sarfoh serves as a commission monitor, and will talk about the role of monitors.
LWV Detroit and the Detroit Public Library are partnering in talks promoting voter education and tools for action.
Link will be sent to registrants before the program.
