Join us for our August Monthly Meeting. Our guest speaker will be Patty Durrell from Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan. Patty is the Regional Community Organizer for Oakland County and will share ways that we can get involved with the positive work that Planned Parenthood does across the state and nation.

As always, we will be joined by our wonderful elected officials for updates about local politics and the upcoming November municipal elections.

A former law clerk to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and the former City of Detroit's senior legal counsel, Eli is also a nationally recognized attorney who has led public-interest lawsuits against some of the country’s toughest adversaries—adversaries such as banks, the opioid industry, slumlords, and corporate polluters.

Kathleen Duffy is a Royal Oak resident and is a planning consultant with the Smith Group, a planning and architectural firm. She will be discussing how a master plan and digital engagement can help a community articulate and achieve its vision, as well as the status of Royal Oak's master plan (and why it needs to be redone). Vote16MI is an organization that is working to extend voting rights to 16 and 17 year olds in local elections. Their three main goals are to strengthen civic education, increase representation for 16 and 17 year olds, and to make voting a habit.

Our guest speaker will be Dr. Kevin Deegan-Krause, Associate Professor of Political Science at Wayne State University. Dr.Deegan-Krause will explain how ranked choice voting could strengthen our democracy. Previously, Dr. Deegan-Krause helped lead the successful "Voters Not Politicians" effort to win redistricting reform in Michigan.

We will elect 2021 officers at our January meeting on Saturday, January 2nd, 10am: Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. You must be a dues-paying member to vote or run in this election. You can pay your dues this month to count towards 2021. Dues remain $10 per person this year. 

The newly-elected chair will have the option of appointing members to our club board. If you are interested in serving on the club board in 2021 you can reply to this email, or you can inform the 2021 chair after the January meeting. The club board meets as needed to plan and execute all club events.

1. Ben Ogden of the Welcome Inn Day Center in Royal Oak. Operated by the South Oakland Citizens for the Homeless, the Welcome Inn is the only low-barrier day center in south Oakland County.

2. Patrick Schuh, Executive Director for America Votes, will provide a debrief of the November election results. Wondering what happened and why in November? Don't miss this speaker.
