Michigan Democratic Party Issues Tea Party Membership Cards to GOP Legislators

Lansing Republicans Have Enacted the Extreme
Tea Party Agenda, Hurt Middle-Class Families

LANSING -- As the Michigan House and Senate kicked off the 2013-14
session today, the Michigan Democratic Party issued Tea Party membership cards
to Republican legislators reflecting the GOP’s extreme agenda, including voting
to raise taxes on seniors and middle-class families to pay for a tax cut for
corporations, hurting kids by cutting funding for public schools and passing
divisive legislation attacking women’s rights and collective bargaining.

"When you look at the agenda of Lansing Republicans, it is the extreme Tea
Party agenda,” said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer. “Instead of
focusing on improving public education and creating jobs, they’ve hiked taxes
on seniors and middle-class families to pay for a $2.5 billion tax cut for
corporate special interests, slashed funding for our kids’ schools, attacked
women’s rights and undermined collective bargaining rights. We are providing
these Tea Party membership cards to GOP legislators because they reveal whose
side they are on -- the side of Dick DeVos and the Koch Brothers, not the side
of Michigan’s middle-class families.”

LANSING -- Despite the cloud of a grand jury investigation hanging over
him and a record of divisive, secretive leadership during the previous
legislative session, Jase Bolger will return as the top Republican in the
Michigan House, having won re-election as Speaker.

“Jase Bolger continues his reign of corruption and division over the Michigan
House with his re-election as Speaker. What an embarrassment for Michigan that
the best the GOP could come up with for Speaker was an election-rigging
specialist who could be indicted at any time,” said Michigan Democratic Party
Chair Mark Brewer. “Today he spoke in platitudes about bipartisanship and
looking forward to the future, but his actions speak louder than words.
Bolger’s extreme Tea Party agenda is dictated by Dick DeVos and the Koch
Brothers, not the needs of Michigan’s middle-class families.”

A one-person grand jury is currently investigating Bolger, former Rep. Roy
Schmidt and others for recruiting fake candidate Matt Mojzak to run against
Schmidt, helping Mojzak to file a fraudulent candidate affidavit and then
covering up their involvement in the scheme.

As Speaker, Bolger has advanced a divisive Tea Party agenda, including pushing
through so-called “right to work” legislation, slashing taxes for corporate
special interests while raising them for middle-class families and seniors,
cutting funding for public education and passing anti-choice legislation. In
addition, Bolger subverted democracy and transparency when he authorized
closing the Capitol building to Michigan taxpayers during the lame duck
session.

investigation, visit www.bolgergate.com.
