JOHN CONYERS, U.S. HOUSE JUDICIARY CHAIR,
TO KEYNOTE OAKLAND
DEMS'
RULE OF LAW  EVENT MAY 29TH

           OCDP
will pay tribute to the justice community at its Rule of Law Reception May 29
in
Troy.  The
program will include special guests from across
Michigan.
            Keynote speaker
for the event is
­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­U.S. Representative John
Conyers.  Conyers chairs the U.S. House
Judicial Committee.  Michigan Supreme
Court Justice Marilyn Kelly will be honored with OCDP’s 2008 Wings of Justice
Award for her commitment to public service.

            Congressman Conyers, a 14th District Detroit
Democrat , is serving his 21st  term in the House.  Conyers was a member of the Judiciary
Committee in its 1974
hearings on the Watergate impeachment
scandal and played a prominent role in the recent impeachment process, giving
him the distinction as the only Judiciary Committee Member to have served on
both panels.  He is also one of the 13
founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) and is considered the Dean
of that group. 

           Justice Kelly was elected to the
Michigan Supreme Court in 1996. 
Previously she served twelve years on the Michigan Board of Education,
the last two as its president. She has also served as president of the Women's
Bar Association and of the Women Lawyers' Association of Michigan. She has been
a member of the State Bar Representative Assembly and the Family Law Council
for the State Bar of Michigan. From 1999 through 2003, Justice Kelly was
co-chair of the Open Justice Commission, an organization of the State Bar
devoted to making justice available to all, regardless of factors like race,
color, creed or disability. Justice Kelly is on the governing board of the
National Consortium for Racial and Ethnic Fairness in the Courts.

           Also speaking at the event will be
former State Court of Appeals Judge Jessica Cooper.

           Jessica
Cooper was a founding member and the first president of the
Michigan chapter of the American Constitution Society. Additionally, she
currently serves on the Executive Committee and is a Master and Team Leader of
the American Inns of Court through the Oakland County Bar Association.  Cooper is a qualified civil mediator in
Michigan and a certified arbitrator for the American Arbitration
Association.  Cooper is a candidate for
Oakland County Prosecutor.

           OCDP chair Dave Woodward will serve
as master of ceremonies.  

          
The dinner is a premier regional event. The event helps fund Democratic
campaigns in
Oakland County and the state of Michigan.

6:00 p.m., General reception
starts at
6:30 p.m. Doors open for

5:30 p.m.  All events take

The event is open to the public. VIP reception tickets are $250 per person and

made the Celebrate Birmingham Parade on May 18 a huge success.  Thank you
to the Birmingham-Bloomfield Dems Club for their support with marchers and for
sponsoring the helium for the balloons.  Thank you to our fine Candidate
for the U.S. House 9th District Gary Peters and his campaign
staff, and to our fine candidate Shelia Smith who's running for Oakland County
Clerk and her staff.   And where was the Oakland
County Republican Party?  A no show.

 OCDP On the Road is a team of
volunteers, all members of the Oakland County Democratic Party, who join
together with Democratic campaigns and local Democratic Clubs to support local,
county-wide,

from holiday parades and fireworks events and town and city summer and fall
