Former County Commissioner switches to Democratic Party

Will Molnar, former County Commissioner, District 13, writes in the December 19th issue of the Oakland Press that he has left the Republican Party and has joined the Democratic Party.

Pro life, religious stance forces GOP party switch

As a moderate on the political spectrum, I have been troubled by an element within the Republican Party that questions former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s fitness for the presidency because he is a Mormon.

I thought the “religious issue” was settled once and for all back in 1960 when then Massachusetts Sen. John F. Kennedy addressed it from the standpoint of being Catholic. Freedom of religion has been guaranteed to us in our Bill of Rights and it is my personal belief that religion should be left out of responsible public policy debate.

I also have never felt comfortable with the Republican Party’s pro-life stance.

How can a pro-life position lead to sound public policy when many parts of the world are suffering from the devastating effects of over population?

My personal belief system has always supported a woman’s right to choose.

Rather than feel like a stranger within the Republican Party, I have decided to join the Democratic Party.

I am not alone. It is a fact that Oakland County has been trending Democratic for several years.

A fact that, I am sure, has not been lost on the chairman of the Oakland County Republican Party. Although some of my friends in the Republican Party may not agree with my decision, none can say that I lack a conscience.
