- In February, Governor Granholm directed the state legislature to take immediate action to solve Michigan's urgent budget crisis. She proposed a comprehensive plan to solve our crisis with a combination of cuts, reforms, and new revenues. Now, seven months later, the legislature has still not fulfilled its constitutional duty of passing a budget plan and our state's budget crisis grows worse each day.
Governor Granholm has reconciled more than $4 billion in budget deficits since she took office and state government is at its smallest size since 1973. But, more cuts will increase class sizes in our schools, take police of the streets, take away health care from thousands, and prevent us from investing in good jobs. Trying to resolve Michigan's budget crisis using a "just-cuts" scheme just hurts real people.
Governor Granholm's plan to solve our budget crisis protects health care, public safety, and education because these are key investments that protect people and keep Michigan competitive. Her plan puts our budget house in order and invests in the people and the programs that make Michigan a great place to live, learn, and earn.
