Oak Park/Huntington Woods/Royal Oak Township Club

Thursday, May 20, 2021 - 03:05 pm

This month, the club is spotlighting our partners in the labor movement! Unions have long supported a better, more equitable society through many avenues, including political support for liberal Democrats. Many of the most important changes of the last century, from minimum wage and hour laws to the civil rights act, would not have been possible without the support of labor and working people. Both of our current Congresspeople got their start in labor, Congressman Levin as an organizer, Congresswoman Lawrence as an activist in her union. We will hear from David Hecker, president of AFT Michigan, and Meghan Courtney, and Outreach Archivist at the Reuther Library, Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs at Wayne State, and a former AFSCME Archivist, as they talk about the past, present, and future of labor.
