Thursday, Sep 30, 2021 - 03:09 pm

Greetings!

Our regular September meeting date has been changed to Thursday September 30 out of respect for our Jewish members who will be observing the High Holy Day of Yom Kippur.

Please join us on Thursday September 30, 2021 at 7:00 pm. Laurie Evans of the Democratic Precincts Delegates of Oakland County will speak specifically to our Precinct Delegates, so all our Precinct Delegates will want to hear what she has to say.

Our guest speaker will be Yvette McElroy-Anderson who is the Director of the Fannie Lou Hamer Pac. She will speak about this amazing Civil Rights and Voting Rights activist, her life and legacy. You will want to hear about the lessons she taught and how they still apply to today.

Hope to see all of you on Thursday September 30 at 7 pm.

The agenda and zoom link are attached.

P.S. Please check out our website - ophwdems.org. Check out our Take Action tab to see how you can get involved in club and Dem Party activities.

We also have club t-shirts available for sale on our website.

Our July 15 meeting will be about our local elections. There is no election in Royal Oak Township this year. There are also no primary elections in any of our 3 cities. We will be hearing from the candidates running for re-election to the Huntington Woods City Commission, Joe Rozell and Jules Olsman, who are currently running unopposed. The filing deadline is July 20. For Oak Park, the 2 candidates running for City Council, Carolyn Burns and Shaun Whitehead are also running unopposed. The only contested race is for Oak Park Mayor. We'll hear from Mayor Marian McClellan and from her opponent Crystal Bailey. Each candidate will speak for 5-10 minutes about their reasons for running and present their platform. There will not be a question and answer period. This is not a debate but rather a chance for us to learn about the candidates and their vision for our cities.

Thursday, May 20, 2021 - 03:05 pm

This month, the club is spotlighting our partners in the labor movement! Unions have long supported a better, more equitable society through many avenues, including political support for liberal Democrats. Many of the most important changes of the last century, from minimum wage and hour laws to the civil rights act, would not have been possible without the support of labor and working people. Both of our current Congresspeople got their start in labor, Congressman Levin as an organizer, Congresswoman Lawrence as an activist in her union. We will hear from David Hecker, president of AFT Michigan, and Meghan Courtney, and Outreach Archivist at the Reuther Library, Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs at Wayne State, and a former AFSCME Archivist, as they talk about the past, present, and future of labor.
