Precinct Delegates are sometimes referred to as Convention
Delegates since one of the key roles for a Precinct Delegate is to vote at
County, Congressional District, and State Conventions. Candidates for statewide
offices(Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, etc.) are determined at
State Conventions. Elected officials and candidates also vote with Precinct
Delegates and MDP party members as of a certain date. One election that requires
the votes of elected Precinct Delegates is at the
County Level to elect the Oakland County Democratic
Party (OCDP) Executive Committee, which in turn, elects the OCDP Board members.
These two elections should happen again this November, by MDP rules, usually
three weeks after the November 4th Election.

Precinct Delegates, Elected Officials and Candidates are allowed
to renew their party membership just before (on the day of) an election,
whereas MDP members must join or renew their membership at least 30 days prior
to an election.

Delegates are allocated by County or Congressional District (by
District in the case of
Oakland) based upon votes, by precinct, for the
Democratic Party Secretary of State in the last election (i.e. 2006). The
current formula to determine the number of delegates per precinct is: 1-250 (1
delegate), 251-500 (2 delegates), over 500 (3 delegates). Elected Precinct
Delegates are a sign of strength of the Democratic Party. OCDP goal:
increase Precinct Delegates in 2008!

To become a precinct delegate, complete the downloadable Precinct
Delegate Affidavit of Identity (your signature notarized either by the Clerk’s
office or at a bank) and submit the affidavit either to your local Township
Clerk or to the Oakland County Clerk’s office before May 13 at
4 PM. The sooner you file the better!
Election Day for Precinct Delegates is the August 5 Primary. If you are
uncontested on the ballot, you only need one vote (yours) to win. If contested,
you just need one more vote than the other person(s) to win.

Precinct Delegates can and should take responsibility to help
organize their precinct, however Precinct Captains specifically have this
responsibility, and Precinct Captains do not have special voting rights.
